A monthly publication of the PMI® Healthcare SIG                                                 March 2007
Message from the President

At the heart of the Healthcare SIG's outreach to our members is volunteerism. As participants, members are provided with hands-on volunteer opportunities that help heighten awareness for the needs of the SIG and healthcare project management in general. We believe that innovation fortifies our organization through the discovery of new opportunities to serve our members and their employers.

Reasons given for volunteering:

  • Believe in the 'cause'
  • Connection to others in the same industry
  • Make professional contacts and network
  • Build their resume
  • Increase personal knowledge
  • For PDUs

Some positive outcomes from involvement are increased visibility, recognition, support of other project managers and credibility among peers. Know that your Healthcare SIG Board of Directors understand what drives you and appreciates your willingness to get involved, for whatever reason. In my own career, acquiring recognition from outside my organization created a visibility that has helped me move forward. For those who aren't able to give of their time right now, continuing as a member, supporting the Healthcare SIG and sending us input strengthens the group as a whole.

Feel free to contact me any time you have a question or concern. We are listening!

Michele Mills, PMP
Healthcare SIG President

Highlights from HIMSS'07
by Raymond McIntyre, PMP, Director of Membership Services

Keynote speakers included Steven Ballmer of Microsoft, Colin Powell and
Stephen Covey.
There were over 24,000 attendees and 900 participating vendors. Of the 300+ education seminars, the role of project management was included and duly recognized as vital in meeting expectations of clients. While many projects can be brought in on time and on budget, few sponsors will remember that if the expectations aren't met. Therefore understanding the requirements is key in true
project success.

QUALITY and the increased need to ensure proper standards are met was a HOT TOPIC for 07 HIMMS. The term "Quality" means many things to many people and it is among the key ingredients
in the recipe for success in carrying out "HEALTHCARE PROJECTS." The increased need for quality input, quality roles
and even quality intervention when projects are being "FORCED"
to accommodate political agendas is not always understood. We should all keep inmind that internal and external "QUALITY TEAMS" are resources that may be called upon anytime risks arise.

The Temptations "jammin"
in the street outside the
New Orleans Arena.

Today, when we are guided to seek excellence in the healthcare   arena, we are informed to check and verify the training and   credentials of the provider to ensure that optimum standards are   met. (e.g. are those physicians board certified?). So also, serious   consideration should be given as to examine whether or not the   project manager assigned to carry out the projects of noteworthy   consequence possesses all the skills, knowledge and attitude to   carry out such an endeavor, and are they certified as a PMP.   While certification does not necessarily imply competence, it can   go a long way to lessen the risks that outcomes will not meet   expectations.

We were fortunate to have Tokiharu Miyahara, M.D.,Ph.D., PMP, Chief Surgeon Kobe City General Hospital Kobe-city, Japan visit our booth ar HIMMS. He is a member of "public and advertise committee" in PMI Tokyo and a board of trustees of Japan Association for Medical Informatics (JAMI). He is now under the big project of implementation of New Hospital EHR.

It is a great realization to understand that surgeons recognize the value of being a PMP. I fully intend to maintain contact and share information in a fruitful networking opportunity in which many can grow and add value.

"Sustainable Project Management - The Future is Now!
"

7 May, 2007 - Skylands, Randolph, NJ

The work of project management involves sustained effort to achieve objectives; in turn, project management assures results that sustain the business. The results of projects produce lasting outcomes that may also have unintended consequences. Project managers are obliged to consider the social, environmental and economic context in which their projects are planned and implemented; assessing impact to assure that the desired outcome is produced. Project managers must also sustain themselves and their teams throughout the project life cycle!

The 2007 Symposium will feature an engaging program with dynamic keynote speakers, a variety of track sessions and ongoing opportunities to interact with poster presenters, vendors, and PMI local interest groups. In addition, you'll be able to network with other project management professionals.
