10 ideas for forming a new LIG
- Put
together an initial list of those interested in joining
your group. They must be both PMI and PMI Healthcare SIG
members. Knowing what the scope of interest is in your
area will help you focus on short and long term goals.
-
Contact PMI Healthcare SIG (LIG Chair) for information,
ideas and resource support.
- Meet
with local PMI Chapter President or appropriate leader
for your area. Get approval for starting a LIG in your
area of interest (healthcare).
- Chapter
will likely want some details on why you feel it is important
to have a LIG in your area. You may want to prepare a
1-2 page business plan explaining the special needs of
your group, what you hope to accomplish, what the benefits
are to PMI, the local PMI Chapter and the individuals
that will be part of your LIG.
- After
you receive formal approval from your local Chapter, recruit
a volunteer LIG chairperson to facilitate the LIG meetings,
write/send newsletters, generate membership, etc.
- Once
the LIG chair has been established, you can decide if
the group is large enough to warrant additional officers.
- Start
scheduling meetings and securing meeting locations/rooms.
Good to start with at least 3 months into the future,
so people can plan ahead.
- Plan
meeting topics, in advance, for your meetings and make
certain you have the appropriate speakers, plus backup
speakers or meeting ideas in case they aren't able to
be there.
- Create
a calendar for at least 3 months out. Even if all you
have are the scheduled meetings, this is a good start.
You can talk about what you want to do in the future and
add things to the calendar for updating later.
- Communication
will be the key to getting your LIG going and more important
KEEPING it going. Send out monthly newsletters with both
general PM Healthcare information or ideas, links to the
PMI Healthcare web site, new LIG site we are creating
now, calendar of events and anything else you feel is
appropriate for your individual LIG.
Make
sure to keep in touch with the PMI Healthcare LIG Chair
(me!), so you can get help in weak areas and get more ideas
if you need them. I'll also be able to give you some ideas
for meetings, so when you get to that point we can talk
about those.
Good
Luck!
